LISTEN NOW TO KxOK
"TV was a poor companion for homework, I learned as I entered my teens. And I developed a love for rock 'n' roll music. So for the price of a 9-volt battery, I could squeeze a few hours of music out of a transistor radio.
Almost every kid I knew listened to rock on KXOK, especially the nightly Johnny Rabbitt show. You could hear it privately on a little white earplug at the end of a flimsy cord — or you could just let the sound blare from the radio's 2-inch speaker. It had all the fidelity of a burger joint drive-through intercom.
As the battery would wane, the differences between Frankie Valli and Diana Ross became less distinct. The Four Tops seemed to fade to three. The Beach Boys became the Beach Boy."
Pat Gauen's column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch rang a bell with me...I spent my teen years listening to KXOK just like he did, and I had many of the same great memories. But as a Top 40 radio junkie and a Live365.com hobby broadcaster, I could do something about it. With permission from the webmaster at the KXOK Tribute site, I edited the audio clips of the DJ's, jingles, even the news and commercials, and put them together with the music of the 1960's to re-create the sound of this great station.
KXOK, the St. Louis Legend lives again at Live 365, starring the one and only Johnny Rabbitt and his sidekick Bruno J. Grunion. Listen in now and re-live the heyday of one of America's most dominant Top 40 radio stations!
