Click here to learn more about Dickson and his job pulling carriages

Welcome to Dickson's web site! Dickson is a very large and friendly, horse that has been giving people carriage rides for the Old Towne Carriage Company in Fernandina's Historic District since 1993.

Here's a picture of Dickson when he was only 4 years old. He is the second horse in the picture and was much smaller than he is now. As he grew up, he became much bigger than other horse, "Big Jim."

He was born in Dickson, Tennessee and that's why his name is "Dickson." He is a Belgian Draft Horse which are the largest and strongest of all horses. This is why he was trained to be a work horse. He moved to Alabama when he was 2 years old and became a logging horse. While in Alabama, Dickson pulled logs in the marshes where they can't get heavy equipment. These logs were cut into pieces of wood and used to build houses.

Lucky for Dickson, his owner retired when he was only 4 years old. Mike Nevers, the president of the Florida Draft Horse Association bought him and 3 months later Rita Jackson bought him from Mike. He then came to Amelia Island in 1993 where he has a much easier job pulling our carriages in the Historic District of Fernandina Beach. It's 2008 now, so he has been doing this for 15 years already. Dickson is 19 years old now which is just past middle age for a horse; and he still likes his job.
